Well child visits

Even when your child is healthy, it’s important for their pediatrician to regularly monitor their growth and development. These visits usually include:

  • Measurements for height, weight, and head circumference.
  • Screening for developmental milestones.
  • Vision and hearing tests.
  • Time to discuss other health concerns.

Recommended schedule for wellness visits (also called well child checks)

  • Newborn
  • 1 month
  • 2 months
  • 4 months
  • 6 months
  • 9 months
  • 12 months (1 year)
  • 15 months
  • 18 months (1.5 years)
  • 24 months (2 years)
  • 30 months (2.5 years)

Starting at 3 years, your child should see their pediatrician once per year.

Your child’s pediatrician may also offer sports physicals, provide vaccinations required for international travel, screen for behavioral health concerns, and provide diagnostic testing and referrals for specialists.

Childhood vaccine schedule

Vaccinations are an essential part of keeping your child healthy and protected against a range of diseases. AHN Pediatrics physicians believe in the safety and effectiveness of vaccines to prevent serious illness and save lives. We firmly believe that all children and adults should receive all recommended vaccines according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention schedule

If you have any questions about the recommended vaccine schedule, please speak to your AHN Pediatrics provider.

Driver, school, and sports physicals

Your child may need specific exams before earning their learner’s permit, attending school, and participating in organized sports. Driver physicals look at your child’s vision, reflexes, memory, and hearing. School physicals focus on general wellness but do not go as in-depth as other physicals. Sports physicals look at your child’s joints, flexibility, past injuries, and heart function to ensure safe participation in athletics.

AHN Pediatrics also offers baseline concussion testing with an FDA-cleared device called ImPACT®. This test provides a number that doctors can use for comparison if you think your child may have a concussion.

Teen and young adult care

The health concerns of children entering puberty and teenagers becoming young adults are different from those of younger children. During these stages of development, there are many physical, emotional, and social changes that happen. It’s important for your child to continue to see their pediatrician for routine check-ups, screenings, and immunizations.

Although AHN Pediatrics see children from birth through age 21, your child may feel more comfortable transitioning their care to an adult primary care provider in their older teen years. Talk with their pediatrician about how to make this transition as smooth as possible.

Developmental and behavioral health screenings

AHN pediatricians can assess your child's motor skills and language development or evaluate them for behavioral health conditions like attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, and depression. If you have concerns about your child’s development, bring them up at a well-child visit.

Identifying and managing any developmental or behavioral health conditions early can help improve your child’s health and well-being. Learn more about developmental and behavioral health within AHN Pediatrics.

Diagnostic testing and referrals

If your child has a specific health concern that requires specialized care, their pediatrician can provide a referral to a specialist.

Sick child visits

Schedule a sick child appointment when your child is not feeling well, has a minor injury, or needs chronic disease management. Not sure if you need a sick child appointment? Registered nurses are available during office hours to discuss acute care concerns and answer routine questions about care, child development and other issues over the phone.

Minor illnesses and injuries

Your child’s pediatrician will evaluate their symptoms to provide a diagnosis and treatment plan for common childhood illnesses and conditions, including:

  • Viral and bacterial infections — colds, flu, COVID-19, strep throat, some ear infections.
  • Abdominal pain — constipation, diarrhea, food poisoning, acid reflux.
  • Skin infections and conditions — rashes, eczema, cold sores, fungal infections like athlete’s foot.
  • Minor injuries — cuts, scrapes, bruises, muscle strains.

Pediatricians can offer guidance on managing symptoms and recovering from minor illnesses and injuries. They can also prescribe medications as part of a treatment plan when necessary.

Chronic condition management

Your child’s pediatrician can also manage any chronic conditions that may develop during childhood, including asthmaallergies, diabetes, epilepsy, and obesity. They work with other specialists when needed to provide comprehensive care and ongoing management of chronic conditions.

Pediatric urgent or emergency care

When an illness or injury is more serious or the pediatrician’s office is closed for the day, you may wonder what level of care is appropriate for your child.

Urgent care is usually best for conditions that should be treated within 24 hours, but are not life-threatening, such as:

  • Strains and sprains.
  • Minor broken bones — like fingers and toes.
  • Infections — ear, throat, urinary tract.
  • Seasonal allergies.
  • Minor cuts and burns.
  • Dizziness.

Take your child to the emergency room (ER) for life-threatening situations that need immediate medical attention, such as:

  • Chest pain.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Stroke symptoms.
  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Uncontrolled bleeding.
  • Serious head injury.
  • Major burns or broken bones.

All AHN emergency departments are ready to care for pediatric patients. Pediatric experts are available on-site at AHN Wexford Hospital and AHN Saint Vincent Hospital. Should your child need extensive or intensive care, they may be transferred to Children’s Hospital
